Flashcards › Professional Crane Operator Study Guide
Name the maximum stability load rating of a crane with outriggers. 85% of tipping Name the maximum stability load rating of a crane with no outriggers. 75% of tipping When a mobile crane is mounted on a barge, the load rating must be modified in what way? As recommended by the manufacturer or a qualifed person. Where must the durable rating chart be located? It must be attached to the crane in a position where the operator can read it while in the seat. What is backward stability? The ability of the crane to avoid turning over backward (away from the boom). Operators may need to understand how backward stability is determined to avoid problems. Load hoist drums must have a minimum of how many full wraps of rope at all times during operation? Two (2) What is the minimum pitch diameter for boom hoist sheave? 15 times the rope diameter What is the minimum pitch diameter for load hoist sheaves? 18 times the rope diameter What is the minimum pitch diameter for hook block sheaves? 16 times the rope diameter A hook block and "headache ball" must: (list 4) 1) be heavy enough to pull rope from the drum with the hook at its highest position for the parts of line in use, 2) Be labeled with its capacity, 3) Be labeled with its weight, 4) Have a latch that will close the throat opening (except when impractical) What type of crane must have a seatbelt for operator use during transit and travel? A single-operator-station, wheel-mounted crane (for rough terrain) A boom length indicator that is readable from the operator's seat must be provided on a telescopic boom crane. When may this requirement be eliminated? If the capacity is not affected by boom length (This was not part of the 1968 standard) When is it allowable for a power-operated outrigger to not be visible from its operating location? Only when a signalperson assists the operator. In certain cases, the upper may have to be rotated to meet this requirement. Refer to Page 1-24 in the manual for further discussion. What is required if a crane's float latches are broken or missing? The crane must be taken out of service. What is the purpose of an anti-two-block device? The device will stop machine functions that will worsen the situation such as hoisting up, telescoping out and booming down. Is a two-block warning device required? It is required on cranes manufactured after Feb 28, 1992. Before that date, it was only a suggestion. Should a new crane with a capacity of 3 tons or more should have a load indicator.? Yes. Where should power line warning signs be posted? On every crane and visible from the operator's seat. What information must be contained on a power line warning sign? The sign must warn the operator to maintain 10 feet minimum clearance of 50kV power lines. Module 1 - Rules and Regulations
