The study of population geography. demography The portion of the Earth's surface occupied by permanent human settlement. Ecumene Number of people per area. Arithmetic density or Population density Number of people per area of farmland. Physiological density Number of farmers per area of farmland. Agricultural density Number of live births per 1,000 people over a year. Crude Birth Rate (CBR) Number of deaths per 1,000 people over a year. Crude Death Rate (CDR) Ability to conceive a child. Fecundity In response to restrictive population policies, families kill their female infants so they can try to have male babies. Female infanticide Principle critic of malthusian theory argued that overpopulation could be solved by increasing the number of subsistence farmers. Ester Boserup Policy that encourages some groups of peole to have babies and discrimates against other groups, discouraging their reproduction. Eugenic population policy Group of people usually classified by age. Cohort Maximum number of peole a region can reasonabley sustain. Carrying capacity The removal of salt from saltwater to make drinking water. desalination The number of years it will take for the population to double in size. Doubling time Center, or most intensely affected region, of an outbreak or disaster. Epicenter Restrictive policy that discourages people from having babies. Antinatalist populaton policy Growth that is compounded, like interest in a bank account; contrast with arithmetic growth. Exponential growth Principle critic of Malthusian theory who argued that overpopulation was the fault of unchecked capitalism and unequal distribution of resources, leaving some places unable to care for their populations.
