A very high piece of land. mountain An area of low ground between two hills, usually containing a river. valley A dry, often sandy area where hardly any plants grow because there is so little rain. desert A raised area of land that is smaller than a mountain. hill A large body of fresh water surrounded by land. lake A portion of the ocean that is partly enclosed by land. bay The land that is next to the sea. coast A piece of land that sticks out from a larger land mass and is almost completely surrounded by water. peninsula A piece of land surrounded by water. island The entire body of salt water that covers about 2/3 of Earth's surface. ocean A large, flat area of land. plain A large, natural stream of fresh water that flows into a lake or an ocean. river Students will practice definitions about vocabulary on Social Studies Alive!
