Flashcards › Pentecost and the Holy Spirit - Chpt 9

During the Last Supper Jesus promised His disciples to send the Holy Spirit to help and guide them. Jesus asked His disciples to tell others the news of His resurrection and victory over sin. The Holy Spirit gave the disciples strength and courage to continue Jesus' teachings. The word Pentecost is a Greek word that means fiftieth. Pentecost happened 50 days after the Resurrection of Jesus. Jesus reminded His disciples of His promise to send the Holy Spirit just before His ascension into Heaven. The disciples were together in Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost, a Jewish harvest festival The disciples gathered to pray together with Mary, Jesus' mother. The first sign of the Holy Spirit they received was a sound of strong wind. The second sign of the Holy Spririt was flames in the air. The disciples left the house and began joyfully praising God. People heard the disciples and came running to listen. The people who gathered were from many places and all spoke different languages. They were greatly surprised and in awe because they could each understand what the dispciples said. This third sign of the Holy Spirit is called speaking in tongues. This special event marks the beginning of the Church. Because of the signs of the Holy Spirit, the disciples were more aware of God's love for them. We continue to rely on the Holy Spirit to help us make good choices. When we make bad choices we can pray to the Holy Spirit to forgive us and guide us back to God. The Holy Spirit helped the disciples to understand what Jesus had said and done, and what was to come. Pentecost and the Holy Spirit Catholic Religion Grade 4
