Flashcards › Ch 1 Terms

Decimal System A system of writing numbers based on the number 10. Also called the base 10 system. Decimal Notation A system of notation in which a number is written in the decimal system. Whole Numbers Any of the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3,.... Ordinal Numbers A number that designates a place (as in first, second, third, etc...) in a number sequence. Integers A number that is a whole number or the opposite of a whole number (e.g., one of... -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,...) Positive Numbers The positive integers and 0 and all numbers between them. Negative Numbers The opposite of a positive number. Inequality Symbols Any one of the symbols like <, < or equal to, >, > or equal to, or not equal to to compare two numbers. Double Inequality An expression of an inequality in which two or more inequality symbols of the same form are present. Rate The quotient of two quantities with different units. Ratio The quotient of two quantities with the same unit. Rational Number A number that can be written as a fraction with integers in its numerator and denominator. Base In the power X^Y, X is the base. Exponent In the power of X^Y, Y is the exponent. Exponential Form A number that is written as a power. Numerical Expression A combination of symbols for numbers and operations that stands for a number. Value The result of carrying out the operations in a numerical expression. Evaluating the Expression Carrying out the operations in a numerical expression to find the calue of the expression. Grouping Symbol Symbols such as parentheses that indicate that certain arithmetic operations should be done before others in an expression. Nested Parentheses Parentheses inside a parentheses. Mean (average) The sum of a group of numbers divided by the number of numbers in the collection. Squaring Multiplying a value by itself or raising the value to the power of 2. Square Root If X^2=Y, then X is the aquare root of Y. Radical Sign A symbol for a sqaure root. x-coordinate The first coordinate of a point designated by an ordered pair. y-coordinate The second coordinate of a point designated by an ordered pair. x-axis, y-axis The horizontal/vertical number line on a coordinate graph. origin The point (0,0) where the x-axis and the y-axis intersect. quadrants One of the four regions on a coordinate graph determined by the x-axis and the y-axis. These are the terms from Ch 1.
