To bounce the ball with one hand. Dribble To throw the ball to another player on your team (chest, bounce, outlet) Pass To throw the ball at the net to try to score. Shoot To walk with the ball without dribbling. Travelling To dribble the ball with two hands. Double Dribble To break a rule in basketball. Foul To rotate in a circle on one foot. Pivet To take the ball from the other team. Steal When you hit the ball away from the net during your opponents shot. Blocked Shot To commit so many fouls that you are removed from the game. Foul Out To jump in the way of another player without having both feet on the ground. Block To crash into another player who has both feet on the ground. Charge To hit the hand or body of another player who has the ball. Reach In The player who players directly underneath the net. Center One of two players who play on either side of the net. (power/small) Forward One of two players who play outside of the key (point/shooting) Guard The lines at the ends of the court. Baseline The lines at the sides of the court. Sideline The clock that tells the offensive team how much time they have to shoot the ball. Shot Clock An uncontested shot awarded because of a foul. Free Throw The line where uncontested shots are awarded from. Free Throw Line A standard foul against the opposition. Leads to either free throws or loss of possesion of the ball. Personal Foul A foul because of unsportsmanlike conduct. (Complaining to the referee) Leads to one free throw and loss of possession of the ball. Technical Foul A foul meant to hurt or injure another player. Players who commit this are removed from the game. Flagrant Foul The rectangular box underneath the net. Key The name of the playing area for basketball. Court A running shot, usually hit off the backboard. Lay Up The half circle on either side of the court. An extra point is awarded for shots behind this line. Three point line These terms will be on a test, so make sure you study them.
