A word with the opposite meaing of another word Antonym Punctuation used to indicate a missing letter Apostrophe A position, or stand, on an issue Argument Langauge that implies something is right because everyone is doing it Bandwagon Appeal An interpretation of fact designed to support a particular opinion Bias The use of capital letters at the beginning of sentences and certain kinds of words Capitalization The reason something happens Cause A person, animal, or object that participates in the action of a story Character The methods authors use to show character traits Characterization A quality that makes a character unique Character Trait An organizational pattern in which details area arranged in the order of occurance Chronological Order The turning point of a story Climax Punctuation used after business salutations or introductory words Colon Punctuation used to divide up a sentence Comma To tell how two or more things are similar Compare A word made up of two or more words Compound Word A decision made about a text, based on details from the passage Conclusion The problem the main character has in a story Conflict Words in the same sentence and in sentences that surround a word that help to unlock its meaning Context Clue To explain how two or more things are different Contrast Evaluation of a text's deeper meaning Critical Analysis What happens because of another event, object, or situation Effect An argument that tries to persuade by affecting people's emotions Emotional Appeal A specific detail that supports an idea Evidence Punctuation used to end an exclamation Exclamation Point A technique that tries to persuade by quoting someone who is an expert on the subject Expert Opinion A statement that can be proven Fact The part of a story in which problems are resolved Falling Action Stories made up in the imagination Fiction Language that uses figures of speech for poetic effect, rather than for precise, factual meaning Figurative Language Point of view in which teh narrator is a part of the story First-Person A technique in which an author pauses to tell about past events that affect the present story Flashback A technique in which an author uses clues to suggest what is going to happen Foreshadowing A category of literature or writing Genre A list of words in a book and their definitions Glossary A visual way to show information Graph Words preceding a section of text, indicating what information is in that section Heading A word that is spelled the same as another word but has a different meaning Homograph A word that is spelled and sounds the same as another word but has a different meaning Homonym Exaggeration used for effect Hyperbole Language that appeals to the senses and creates a mental picture Imagery An alphabetical listing of importnat words, phrases, or ideas that comes at the end of the text and includes the page numbers on which the topics are covered Index An educated guess based on evidence or clues Inference A specific word or concept that is important to the main topic Key Idea Words chosen to provoke an emotional response Loaded Language The most important character in a story Main Character The most important point an author makes Main Idea A comparison between two unlike things without the words like or as Metaphor A word that is spelled and sometimes pronounced like another word but is different in meaning Multiple-Meaning Word Writing that is based on factual information Nonfiction A fictional piece written in prose which is longer than a short story and typically contains more than one character Novel What a person feels or thinks about something Opinion A statement that is too general to be true all the time Overgeneralization Punctuation used to end a statement or a command Period Giving human qualities to nonhuman things Personification Language that tries to convince readers to agree with a writer's stand on an issue Persuasion A story that is written to be performed onstage by actors Play These are key vocabulary words which you will need to know.
