A number that has more than two factors Composite Number Numbers that are added Addends A number with one or more digits to the right of the decimal point Decimal The number of square units needed to cover the surface. To find this on a rectangle, multiply length times width. Area The number below the fraction bar that tells how many equal parts of the whole Denominator The result of subtracting two numbers Difference A coin that equals 10 cents Dime In division, the number that is being divided Dividend The number that is dividing the dividend Divisor An amount that equals 100 cents Dollar The amount of time that has passed between two events Elapsed Time A number sentence or an inequality that contains =, >, or < Equation Having the same value or naming the same amount Equivalent To find an answer that is close to the exact amount Estimating A variable mathematical model that uses variables, numbers, and operations, such as +, -, and x to describe a situation Expression Numbers that are multiplied Factors A rule that tells you how to perform an operation on a number, called input, to produce a result, called output. Function The greatest number that is a factor of two numbers Greatest Common Factor (GCF) An equation that contains =, >, or < Inequality Can be found by listing non-zero multiples of each number and then finding the smallest number common to both. Least Common Multiple (LCM) When the denominators of two fractions are the same Like Denominators The number found by adding the numbers and then dividing by the number of numbers Mean The number exactly in the middle when the numbers are listed in order from least to greatest Median A whole number and fraction mixed together. Mixed numbers can be used to represent numbers greater than a whole. Mixed Number The number that appears most often in a set of numbers Mode The product of a number and any counting number Multiple A coin that equals 5 cents Nickel An equation or an inequality that contains =, >, or < Number Sentence The number above the fraction bar that tells how many parts of the whole Numerator A predictable arrangement of numbers, letters, or shapes Pattern A coin that equals one cent Penny The value of each digit in a number depending on its position in the number Place Value A number whose only factors are 1 and itself Prime Number A description of a math problem using words Model The result of multiplying numbers Product A coin that equals 25 cents Quarter The result of dividing two numbers Quotient The difference between the largest and the smallest numbers Range A process used to approximate a value Rounding The result of adding numbers Sum A letter or symbol that stands for another number Variable One of the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and so on Whole Number The distance around a polygon Perimeter These are key math vocabulary words which you will need to know. They will be studied and introduced throughout the year. The more you know about these terms and topics the better!!!
